...."Hindemith subtitled Der Schwanendreher a ‘Concerto after Old Folk Songs for viola and small orchestra’, and Luca Ranieri emphasises the songful character of the solo part on his new recording for Brilliant Classics. Note, for instance, the sweetness with which he sings the lilting theme at the heart of the slow movement. I was particularly touched by his deeply expressive use of portamento at the tune’s return near the movement’s end (start at 7'30").

Ranieri – a veteran of the orchestra at Milan’s La Scala and the Lucerne Festival Orchestra, among others – is alive to the score’s rusticity, too. He imbues the earthy music of the finale with bold gestures and rhythmic brio.....

....."non ho resistito a confrontare la registrazione qui della Sinfonia Concertante con la registrazione di riferimento "Penguin Rosette Collection" di un'altra epoca: l'esecuzione dal vivo del 1982 in Israele con Perlman e Zukerman, diretta da Mehta".                                                                                                                      

...... "nonostante tutta la fama giustificata dei due solisti più "anziani", non posso dire che surclassino Milani e Ranieri qui; l'esecuzione è vivace, tecnicamente abbagliante, il loro rapporto sensibile e il loro coordinamento con l'orchestra impeccabile. Il tono ricco e granuloso della viola di Luca Ranieri, splendidamente bilanciato dalla purezza argentea del violino di Alessandro Milani". 

......."nonostante la registrazione DG abbia uno status di culto, devo dire che ora preferirei ascoltare questa nuova edizione Dynamic sia per il suono che per l'interpretazione, e non mi aspettavo minimamente quel risultato".
